Andrea Arnold's New Film American Honey: Her First Picture Set in the U.S.

Academy Award winning British filmmaker Andrea Arnold (she won for her 2003 short) will shoot her fourth feature — her first based in the U.S. —  this summer. American Honey will chronicle the travels of a runaway teenage girl who sells magazine subscriptions across the U.S.. Partying, young love, and run-ins with the law ensue. The story is purportedly inspired by teenage magazine sales crews that work out of cheap hotels.

American Honey will be an interesting departure for Arnold, especially because her first film set in the U.S. won’t be set in one specific location. It is being described as a “road movie,” and will cover a lot of geographic ground.

Arnold’s two most recent offerings, Wuthering Heights and Fish Tank, also featured troubled young female protagonists and she really knows how to hit the nail on the head on this topic. I wonder if she will again hire non-actors like she did in Fish Tank

The film will be introduced to buyers at Cannes, where Arnold is serving as head of Critics’ Week.
