Annapurna is Here to Stay: Taps 'American Hustle' Producer Jonathan Gordon to Lead Production

Megan Ellison’s high-end independent production company Annapurna Pictures has hired “American Hustle” producer Jonathan Gordon for the newly created position of President of Production. Gordon will oversee development and production for the company and report directly to owner Megan Ellison, the company announced today.

Ellison’s decision to hire Gordon comes after having worked with him (and fellow producers Charles Roven and Richard Suckle) on “American Hustle.”

“After working closely with Jon on ‘American Hustle,'” said Ellison in a statement, “I was so impressed by him that I knew I needed to have him as a part of Annapurna. I have such respect and admiration for him as a producer and a friend, and I am thrilled that Jon has decided to join our team.”

Prior to becoming an independent producer, Gordon was president of production at Universal Pictures. Before that, he worked at Miramax for 15 years. During his tenure, Gordon eventually ascended to Co-President of Production – a position in which he oversaw many of the  studio’s most prestigious titles, including “Good Will Hunting,” “Dogma” and “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.” It’s no wonder he went on to produce “Silver Linings Playbook” and “American Hustle” – two back-to-back Oscar-winning films (both directed by David O. Russell).

“I got to know Megan while working alongside her, Charles and Richard on ‘American Hustle,'” Gordon said in a statement. “Megan has impeccable taste, is a gifted producer, and I
saw firsthand how in Annapurna she has created the most daring,
exciting, and filmmaker friendly environment in the business.”

Although Ellison’s decision to hire Gordon may have stemmed from her experience working with him on “American Hustle,” her decision to bring a producing partner in-house speaks to her business acumen more than anything else – especially considering the announcement that Annapurna is developing its first television series. Notoriously private, Ellison has issued a resounding statement to the industry by partnering up with Gordon; making it clear that she and Annapurna are in it for the long-haul.

Other Annapurna projects from 2013 include Spike Jonze’s “Her” and Harmony Korine’s “Spring Breakers.” The company recently announced they were re-teaming with Academy
Award-winning filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow (“Zero Dark Thirty”) on a film based on the nonfiction book “The True American” by j
ournalist Anand Giridharadas.
