Dances With Films Names Opening and Closing Night Films, Industry Panels

Dances With Films has announced it will open and close this year’s festival with “A Winter Rose” and “The Toy Soldiers,” respectively – both of which are made by DWF alumni.

Written, directed and produced by Riz Story, “A Winter Rose” is a young woman’s coming-of-age story as she pursues her dream of. The soundtrack for the film contains 20 original songs that were written for the film by Story. Set in the 1980s, Erik Peter Carlson’s “The Toy Soldiers,” is a drama that explores grief through five parallel story lines.

Now in its 17th year, DWF is an 11 day celebration of independent film that takes place annually in Los Angeles. In addition to screening over 100 features, documentaries and shorts, DWF hosts a series of panels that feature a wide range of industry professionals in discussion on the evolving landscape of independent filmmaking. This year’s panelists include, Zola Mashariki (SVP of Production, Fox Searchlight), Norm Aladjem (President, Levity Entertainment Group), Mia Bruno (Senior Acquisitions Manager, Gravitas Ventures) and Mickey Cottrell (President, Inclusive PR). Indiewire’s Editor-in-Chief and General Manager Dana Harris will also be hosting a talk and cocktail party at the festival on June 2nd.

In conjunction with this year’s festival, DWF has also announced that it will be launching Dances With Kidz: a program featuring family films coming out of the indie world, as well as films made by children. Dances With Kidz will take place simultaneously with DWF from May 29th to June 8th at the Chinese Theaters in Hollywood.
