EXCLUSIVE: Check Out The Poster For Russell Sheaffer's 'Masculinity/Femininity' -- Based On The Short He Made With James Franco

One of the many notable films about to hit the Inside Out LGBT Film Festival in Toronto (which kicks off this week) is Russell Sheaffer’s “Masculinity/Femininity” — a feature length expansion of the short he made with James Franco a few years back. World premiering at Inside Out, the experimental documentary — shot largely on Super 8mm — pretty much takes off where the short left off.

“In many ways riffing on and engaged with the history, goals, and aesthetics of New Queer Cinema, Masculinity/Femininity’ is an attempt at creating a distinctly queer cinematic space and time,” Sheaffer explained. “It’s shot almost entirely on Super 8mm film, and asks artists and scholars alike – everyone from B. Ruby Rich, Susan Stryker, and Tom Waugh to Carolee Schneeman, Barbara Hammer, Pratibha Parmar, and John Greyson – to “perform” in any way they like, breaking down binaristic notions gender in an incredibly diverse set of ways.”

For Sheaffer, the film was hugely inspired by the Super 8mm films of Derek Jarman, as well as Shirley Clarke’s Portrait of Jason.”

“I really wanted the film to actively engage the history of queer performance while trying to create new spaces for alternate forms of spectatorship, subjectivities, and bodies,” he said.

Check out the film’s poster below. “Masculinity/Feminity” premieres at Inside Out on May 26th. More info here
