Best known for their work in the horror genre, it is a bit strange to see Larry Fessenden and Brent Kunkle’s production banner, Glass Eye Pix, appear at the beginning of a trailer for a documentary titled “American Jesus.” Or perhaps not so strange – given the fact that the documentary explores the impact of Christianity on some of the most unexpected places and individuals.
In a clip provided exclusively to Indiewire, the film explores the concept of the megachurch and the role it plays in community-building. Providing neither criticism nor praise for the churches – which is rather curious considering the strong feelings that typically accompany any sort of commentary generated around the subject of religion – the film’s perspective is akin to that of a bystander.
Although the film’s trailer makes introductions to a wide range of eccentric Christ-loving characters – including a biker and a tattooed preacher – it remains to be seen whether or not the nonpartisan approach to narrative persists throughout the entirety of the film.
“American Jesus” began its run in NYC on May 14th and is currently playing at the IFC Center. The film’s Los Angeles engagement begins on May 23rd at the Downtown Independent. Watch the clip and trailer for the film below:
