A lower than expected Saturday curbed “Godzilla”‘s rumble through the box office this weekend but the monster movie still roared to $93.2 million, just missing the opening $95 million take of “Captain America: Winter Soldier” for highest opening of the year. We’ll have to wait for this coming weekend’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past” for the next shot at dethroning the good Captain. The fanboys came out in droves for the film in Imax, as the format accounted for 15% of the weekend take with $14+ million. The movie will need every ounce of its’ B+ Cinemascore to ward off the “X-Men” invasion coming this Friday.
Elsewhere, “Million Dollar Arm” failed to get out of a bases loaded jam, “Heaven” is up to a very real $82 million cume, “Captain America” hit $250 million domestic, “Belle” and “Chef” continue strong limited runs and Weinstein’s “The Immigrant” opened to a just okay per screen average of $15,100.
