The game of talk show musical chairs plays on.

Comedy Central has tapped Larry Wilmore of “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” to take over the 11:30 PM slot as Stephen Colbert preps his move to CBS to host “The Late Show.” “The Minority Report with Larry Wilmore” will launch in January 2015, replacing the network’s Emmy and ratings champ “The Colbert Report.”

Wilmore, currently Jon Stewart’s Senior Black Correspondent, has long been a writer for television, from classics “In Living Color” and “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” to his Emmy-winning “The Bernie Mac Show,” which he created. Wilmore has also worked as consulting producer on NBC’s “The Office,” which folded last year after a nine-season run.

“I’m beyond excited to have this chance to continue my relationships with Comedy Central and the brilliant Jon Stewart. I love the city of New York and promise to only wear my Laker T-shirts when I’m layering,” said Wilmore, an LA native. Stewart responded: “This is all just a complicated ruse to get him to move to New York and turn him into a Knicks fan.”

When David Letterman heralded his “Late Show” retirement in April, the Internet slammed the trend of having old white guys in the late night hot seat. Comedy Central has responded accordingly, announcing that “The Minority Report” will “feature a diverse panel of voices currently underrepresented in comedy and television.” The network is currently killing it with an excellent slate of diverse programming, including lady-driven series “Inside Amy Schumer” and “Broad City.” (Notably, former SNL comedienne Maya Rudolph is getting her own variety show on NBC.)

From Seth Meyers replacing Jimmy Fallon, who inched out Jay Leno, to Colbert stepping in for Letterman, the late night wars have been headache-inducing. But maybe we can find the salve in Wilmore, who is hilarious and blunt and levelheaded.
