Reese Witherspoon’s ‘Wild’ Gets Oscar Friendly Release Date

Reese Witherspoon's 'Wild' Gets Oscar Friendly Release Date

Fox Searchlight is officially throwing “Wild,” starring Reese Witherspoon, into this year’s Oscar game. The film has been given a December 5, 2014 release date, right in the prime spot for awards season attention.

Quebecois filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallee is at the helm, who just directed both Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto to Oscars for “Dallas Buyers Club.” (The film also nabbed an additional three nominations, including Best Picture and Original Screenplay, as well as a win for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.)

So could Oscar-winner Witherspoon (“Walk the Line”) be looking toward a second Academy Award nomination? She’s kept a pretty low profile over the past few years, with a solid supporting turn in 2012 indie “Mud,” and as the female contingent of a trio with Tom Hardy and Chris Pine in McG’s underrated action comedy “This Means War.” West Memphis Three drama “Devil’s Knot” barely made a splash as Witherspoon’s sole 2013 title.

From an adapted screenplay by Nick Hornby, “Wild” is based on Cheryl Strayed’s bestselling memoir of the same title, which follows the author’s hike of self-rediscovery as she embarks on walking the thousand-mile Pacific Crest Trail. Meanwhile, her personal life is in disarray. (Also starring are Thomas Sadoski, Gabby Hoffman and Laura Dern.)

Here’s the official synopsis:

With the dissolution of her marriage and the death of her
mother, Cheryl Strayed (Reese Witherspoon) has lost all hope.  After years of reckless, destructive
behavior, she makes a rash decision.
With absolutely no experience, driven only by sheer determination,
Cheryl hikes more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, alone.  WILD powerfully captures the terrors and
pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that
maddens, strengthens, and ultimately heals her.
