Reimagined Moviefone Chases the Zeitgeist with New TV and Video on Demand Features

AOL’s once-cratering brand Moviefone is rising from the ashes with a newly reinvented website and user-friendly app. In keeping with the competitive, content-saturated times, Moviefone’s new features will augment its outmoded movie listings and showtimes service with a search tool to help consumers find what they want to watch, and where to stream it. The site and app will also include television content.

Though search engines such as Instant Watcher and Where to Watch have valiantly attempted such a database, the new Moviefone looks to be the most streamlined catalogue of streaming content yet. A simple search will tell you where to watch any film you’d like across various platforms, from Amazon Instant Video to Netflix and iTunes, though VOD subscription services like Fandor, SnagFilms and MUBI don’t come up. And good luck finding that obscure arthouse classic. But surely the Moviefone library will continue to grow.

On the heels of competitor Rotten Tomatoes’s new TV Zone — which allows critics and users to review individual television episodes — Moviefone users can now search for television content, whether a particular episode of a series or an entire season, and find out where it can be streamed or downloaded.

The new Moviefone is also kicking off two other exclusive features. Though in February 2014, Moviefone announced that it would be shuttering its automated phone service, voiced by “Mr. Moviefone” Russ Leatherman, Moviefone has opened a casting call for the new Mr. or Mrs. Moviefone. The defunct call-in service, edged out by other more accessible listings sites, will be revamped for Moviefone’s mobile platform.

Meanwhile, Disney and Moviefone are forging a unique collaboration to promote the new fairytale fantasy “Maleficent,” out May 30 in the US, starring Angelina Jolie. The campaign will leverage Moviefone’s newly burnished ticketing feature, and will include co-branded media placement and exclusive content, available on the site today.

AOL brought in Whale Rock Industries late last year for this sleek overhaul, and though the new Moviefone is still in its nascent stages, it looks like the new partner delivered the goods. Have a look-see here.
