Watch: Laverne Cox Gets the Best Birthday Present Ever: The Cover of Time Magazine

I don’t know what you got for your last birthday, but it would be hard to top what Laverne Cox received today. The “Orange is the New Black” star is on the cover of this week’s Time Magazine as the new face for the transgender movement.

The story’s subhead reads: “Nearly a year after the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage, another social movement is poised to challenge deeply held cultural beliefs. Laverne Cox has gone from being bullied for acting feminine as a kid in Mobile, Ala., to starring in ‘Orange Is the New Black’ and becoming a public face for the transgender movement.”

Cox acknowledged the statement was much more than a great gift by posting a sweet, meaningful message on her Facebook page.

“What a wonderful bday present! Yes today is my birthday and I am on the cover of TIME magazine,” Cox said. “I realize this is way bigger than me and about a tipping point in our nation’s history where it is no longer acceptable for trans lives to be stigmatized, ridiculed, criminalized and disregarded. This is for my trans siblings out there and for anyone who has ever been told that who you know yourself to be at your core is not legitimate. You are who you know yourselves to be.”

Cox plays Sophia Burset on “Orange is the New Black,” a standout character in a show packed with many memorable people. You can read her interview with Time Magazine and watch part of it below.

In the video, Cox says, “The reality is I don’t represent the entirity of the trans community. There are multiple experiences and multiple relationships to one’s identity. […] Be willing to let go of preconceptions we might have of people who are different than us and taking people on their own terms.”

The Netflix original series returns for season two Friday, June 6th. The video and Time’s cover image are below.
