What Might Affect Grosses This Weekend:NBA/NHL Playoffs And The Memorial Day Effect

Weather is always a factor on Memorial Day weekend and this year most of the country will have to deal with the heat, especially in the south and the plains states.  As far as rain, those areas might have their Memorial Day cookouts rained out on Saturday and/or Sunday, driving many to their local movie houses.

From a sports standpoint, the NBA and NHL playoffs are in full force as both leagues’ conference finals continue this weekend, which will affect grosses.  The Indiana Pacers & Miami Heat play Saturday night at 8:30 (Eastern Time) and the Chicago Blackhawks and Los Angeles Kings play at 8:00 PM (Go Kings).  Sunday finds the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder at 8:30 PM and Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers at 8:00 PM.

Look for Sunday to be higher than normal for all films this weekend and they all receive the gift-with-purchase of a higher than normal Monday as well.  Especially with family titles, the Sunday of Memorial Day can often be the highest grossing day of the weekend.  Looking at the last few years, animated titles such as “Epic” in 2013 and “Kung Fu Panda 2” in 2011 both enjoyed big Mondays as well, with 78% of their four day weekend take coming from the Friday through Sunday.  Even when you look at a PG-13 film like 2012’s “Men In Black 3” the three day is only 79% of the four day take, showing how strong the Monday of Memorial Day weekend can be with family movies.  However, R rated titles such as 2013 offerings “Fast 6” and “Hangover 3” along with 2011’s “Hangover 2” all grossed roughly 83% of their four day take from the first three days.
