Will Ferrell & Adam McKay Producing A New ‘The Flintstones’ Animated Feaure

Yabbadabawhatthef*ck?? Because Will Ferrell had such a successful time adapting “Land Of the Lost,” he’s now teaming up with buddy Adam McKay to (exec) produce a new animated version of “The Flintstones.”

To be fair, Ferrell didn’t produce or help develop “Land Of The Lost,” but that stone-age comedy was slapped with a PG-13 rating and bombed hard back in 2009. And now “The Flintstones” seems to be headed towards a PG-rating.

A full-length animated feature, THR reports that Ferrell and McKay are executive producing a version of “The Flintstones” for Warner Bros. via their Gary Sanchez shingle. The project is currently in development, and Chris Henchy, who wrote the Ferrell/Galifianakis comedy “The Campaign,” is writing the script (which may not bode well–that movie was pretty godawful, to be frank).

One could guess “The Flintstones” could be one of the recently dated untitled animated films that WB put on their docket, but these things take a while to take shape, so we’re still guessing something like a ‘LEGO Movie’ sequel is going to take one of those slots. We can probably breathe a bit of relief that the movie won’t be a live-action production because lord knows they tried already in 1994, and I don’t care what movie it is, “The Jetsons” or “Popeye,” if you’re trying to remain faithful to the cartoons, as live-action they are almost always doomed to fail (let’s not get into the folly that is Altman’s spinach-eating sailor).

Getting a celebrated comedy director to produce your beloved kids’ animated show adaptation seems to be the trend du jour; Paul Feig (“Bridesmaids“) is the main producer on 20th Century Fox‘s “Peanuts” animated movie.
