Ever Wanted James Franco to Teach You How to Write? Here's How

When he’s not acting, directing, curating art installations or hosting awards ceremonies, Hollywood Renaissance man James Franco likes to teach. Franco has taught in the film and English departments at USC, UCLA, CalArts and NYU, and thanks to a partnership between Franco and online learning community Skillshare, folks who haven’t had the privilege of enrolling in one of his courses can take now learn from the man online.

On June 10, Skillshare will release Franco’s first online class, “Introduction to Screenwriting for Short Films.” In the self-paced class, Franco and his Rabbit Bandini Productions co-founder Vince Jolivette (together they’ve produced a number of films, including the recently released “Palo Alto”) share insights from their work in film production. The 15 lessons span 90 minutes total, and cover screenwriting topics that include “identifying your concept, the art of adaptation, engaging the audience, pitching to investors” and more. Many of the examples used in the lessons are culled from Franco’s own screenplays (these include “The Broken Tower” and “Child of God”).

Over the course of the 15 lessons, students are expected to write an 8-minute short screenplay. Franco and Jolivette will provide one-on-one feedback to their favorite script.

“When I was an undergraduate at UCLA, I wasn’t in the acting program or the film program because they were incredibly difficult to get into,” said Franco in a statement. “Now that I’m a teacher, I love to participate in online classes like Skillshare because I want to give opportunities to as many passionate young people as possible.”

Enrollment costs just $25. Go here to learn more.
