FIRST LOOK: Two Tantalizing Images from Michael Mann’s New Cyber-Thriller

Two Tantalizing Images of Michael Mann's Upcoming Cyber-Thriller Released

Has Michael Mann found a new title for his next movie, tentatively titled “Cyber,” Legendary/Universal’s crime drama filmed in Hong Kong about American and Chinese agents working to bring down a powerful network of Balkan hackers?

Yesterday, the French website Filmosphere tweeted the photo at the top of this post with the words (translated), “First image from Cyber, Michael Mann’s new film.” Then, according to Empire Magazine, actor Holt McCallany tweeted a second photo from the film–you can see that one below.  Empire reported that the actor’s tweet included the hashtag #blackhat, and speculated that a name change could be underway.

Even more intriguingly, McCallany seems to have deleted that photo from his Twitter account–following Empire’s link leads to a broken URL, and the photo is nowhere to be seen on the star’s main Twitter page.  So for now, it seems like we’re just going to have to keep guessing.

Mann returns to the screen for the first time since 2009’s underrated digital groundbreaker “Public Enemies,” starring Johnny Depp as John Dillinger. He was on board as executive producer and pilot director for HBO’s unlucky “Luck” in 2011, which was canceled after 10 episodes.

Chris Hemsworth, Viola Davis, Tang Wei and Wang Leehorn star along with McCallany. Tang plays Chris Hemsworth’s love interest, and Wang plays her brother. Written by Morgan Davis Foehl and Mann, “Cyber” is produced by Mann and Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni, while Alex Garcia and Eric McLeod will serve as the executive producers.

“Cyber”–or whatever it’s called–is due in theaters January 16, 2015.
