"Game of Thrones" Trial By Combat Ends With a Splat

There’s plenty of opportunity for vengeance in Westeros, but not so much for speeches, as Oberyn Martell (Pedro Pascal) found out at the extremely bloody end of his battle with Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane (Hafbor Julius Bjornsson). The dear, departed Red Viper had plenty of reason to wish the ugliest of deaths upon the Mountain, who raped and murdered his sister and killed her children, and on Tywin Lannister, who seems only too happy to see his son Tyrion beheaded for his grandson Joffrey’s death, despite scant evidence supporting his guilt. But Oberyn attempted to turn Tyrion’s trial by combat into a declaration of the Mountain’s, and therefore Tywin’s, guilt, and that bit of moral theatrics cost him his life, not to mention an open-casket funeral. It’s too bad they don’t have Sergio Leone movies in Westeros; he could have used this immortal piece of advice from “The Good, the Bad & the Ugly.”
