John Green’s fans love him. As in, LOVE him. The “Fault in Our Stars” scribe has nearly 2.5 million(!) followers on Twitter and his vlogbrothers YouTube videos routinely rack up 500,000 to a million hits.
Which means that the Friday release of the film version of “The Fault in Our Stars,” based on Green’s novel about two teenagers who meet in a cancer support group and fall in love, is going to be (in the inimitable words of Joe Biden) a BFD.
In fact, according to Fandango, “Fault” has already broken the company’s record to become the biggest pre-selling love story ticket ever. (The previous titleholder was Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams’s 2012 “The Vow.”) Fandango also notes that “Fault” is the most-anticipated film of this weekend (with “Edge of Tomorrow” and “Maleficent” close behind).
Apparently, the ticket sales company also performed a survey of over 1,000 users who bought advance seats for “Fault in Our Stars,” and the results point to very promising box office numbers for the big-screen romance:
- 81% said they had read Green’s novel
- 80% said they planned to see “Fault” with a group of friends
- 77% saw “Divergent” (which paired “Fault” stars Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort) in theaters
- 64% said that Shailene Woodley was a motivating factor in buying a ticket for the film
As they say, this is gonna be big. And thankfully, while Fox was obviously banking on a pre-sold hit, the movie’s not a sequel and it’s not a superhero story. It might be time to buy some shares of Kleenex, because their sales are bound to do quite well this weekend.
