Michael Pitt to Kick Off Karlovy Vary Film Fest with 'I Origins'

This year’s Karlovy Vary International Film Festival will open with “Boardwalk Empire” star Michael Pitt on hand to introduce Mike Cahill’s “I Origins.” Fox Searchlight, which released Cahill and Brit Marling’s first collaboration “Another Earth,” scooped up the brainy sci-fi drama co-starring Marling and Astrid Bergès-Frisbey at Sundance, where it won  this year’s Alfred P. Sloan prize, which is awarded to a film pertaining to science or technology. Searchlight opens “I, Origins” stateside July 18.

In “I Origins,” Pitt plays a young scientist whose research focuses on the human eye, and who discovers an unexpected, almost mystical, link between the human body and the psyche.

Pitt’s star rose with his turn in the TV show “Dawson’s Creek.”  e’s also collaborated with Gus Van Sant on both “Finding Forrester” and “Last Days”–the latter of which he presented at the 2005 Karlovy Vary fest.  Most recently, he appeared in “Seven Psychopaths” and on TV in “Hannibal.”

The 49th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, which announced highlights of this year’s lineup last week, runs from July 4-12. We’ll be there.
