Trailers from Hell Whiles Away 'The Double Hour'

Today on Trailers from Hell, Brian Trenchard-Smith discusses Giuseppe Capotondi’s darkly delirious Italian thriller “The Double Hour,” winner of three prizes at the 2009 Venice Film Festival.

A puzzle box masquerading as a film noir, “The Double Hour” is the feature film debut of former music video director Giuseppe Capotondi. The film centers on a couple (played by Ksenia Rappoport and Fliippo Timi) who meet at a speed-dating club. A violent encounter with some art thieves leaves Timi dead and Rappoport in a coma. When she awakes she seems to enter a broken-mirror version of her life before the attack. No one is who they seem in this genuinely mysterious mystery and though Capotondi’s film contains echoes of “Vertigo” and “Don’t Look Now,” it remains a singular experience. Rappoport won an acting prize at Venice in 2009.
