TriStar’s Rothman Adds ‘Bridesmaids’ Scribes Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo to His Starry Roster

TriStar's Rothman Adds 'Bridesmaids' Scribes Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo to His Starry Roster

Chalk up another win for new TriStar Productions chief Tom Rothman, who is lining up an impressive roster of movies for Sony release. The latest: Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, the writing team behind 2011’s groundbreaking “Bridesmaids,” are joining forces to write, produce and star in another comedy. The film will also be Wiig’s directorial debut, a welcome change, given that of the 129 major films due to be released this year, only four are directed by women.

Rothman tells The New York Times that the film is about “best friends who find themselves in over their heads and out of their depths, which were, perhaps, not too deep to begin with.”

“We’re very excited to be writing,” Wiig and Mumolo said in a statement. “We will be going into a cave for months to finish. An actual cave. We found one that’s nice and big. We’re putting a couch in there.”

The two comedians were nominated for an Academy Award for their irreverent screenplay to “Bridesmaids,” which brought in $288.4 million for Universal Pictures.

TriStar is on a roll lately under new chairman Rothman, who was essentially pushed out of Fox in 2012.  In addition to the Wiig/Mumolo script, TriStar won a bidding war in April against Fox, Universal and the Weinsteins for “Ricki and the Flash,” a Diablo Cody-penned Meryl Streep vehicle set to be directed by Jonathan Demme.  Clearly, Rothman’s found a place for himself at his new home. “We’re pursuing original stories told with distinctive voices,” he told the Times, “In today’s Hollywood, that is zigging while others zag.”
