Watch: Dave Chappelle Tells David Letterman How to Leave a TV Show

Besides being enormously successful standup comedians, Dave Chappelle and David Letterman do not have much in common — not even their middle names, it turns out. What they do have in common is that Chappelle once walked away from his own lucrative show on Comedy Central, and now Letterman is preparing to exit his long tenure as host of “The Late Show.”

Chappelle sat down on Letterman’s couch last night and talked the CBS late night mainstay through his departing experience, as well as a milieu of other subjects. It has been a decade since Dave Chappelle last appeared on the show, so the conversation was as light and sharp as two old friends, with the utmost respect for one another, catching up on the latest gossip. Among the topics the iconic comedians covered include appraoching stand up (with some pointers from Jerry Seinfeld), hip hop and Aretha Franklin.

Dave Chappelle was making the talk show circuit stop to promote his upcoming shows at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, which will take place June 18-26. Check out the full video of Chappelle’s appearance on The Late Show here:
