Watch: Gillian Robespierre & Jenny Slate on Making 'The Best Friend' the Lead in 'Obvious Child'

A24 has dropped a short featurette on its YouTube channel, in which “Obvious Child” director Gillian Robespierre and star Jenny Slate, talk about their mission to “take back the romantic comedy.”

Gillian Robespierre explains how the short “Obvious Child,” which precluded the feature by about five years, was created as a response to what Robespierre calls “a slew of movies that we were not really connected to.”

Robespierre’s main goal with turning her short into a feature was to take the classic rom-com “best friend” — who is usually just a supporting character, but nevertheless, she insists, the one with the best jokes — and put her in the lead role.

“I think it’s important,” says Slate about her character, “that she seems like a real woman and not an untouchable, unmeetable person.”

Check out the full featurette below. “Obvious Child” is currently playing New York and Los Angeles and is expanding to additional cities in the coming weeks.
