WATCH: Silver-Haired Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges Go Dystopic in ‘The Giver’

Trailer Watch: Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges Go Dystopic in 'The Giver'

A new, longer trailer for Philip Noyce’s “The Giver” has landed, and while it looks all-too-similar to its recent dystopia cousins, it should give some hope to fans of Lois Lowry’s iconic novel.

When the first trailer debuted in March, fans of Lowry’s young adult novel–the story of a young man living in an idyllic community who begins to realize that there is something very dark lurking in the shadows–expressed their concern that the film wouldn’t stay true to the book.  In particular, they pointed to the trailer’s color scheme: in the novel, the protagonist, Jonas, goes from seeing the world in black-to-white to perceiving color as he begins to forgo the mandatory injections that keep his community docile.  The film’s first trailer was all in color.

The materials shown at Cannes were also underwhelming. At least the new trailer puts the change in Jonas’s perception front and center–when the young man, played by Brenton Thwaites, meets the eponymous Giver (Jeff Bridges), he suddenly begins to see color in his previously monochrome world.

“The Giver” certainly has a notable cast, joining Bridges with Katie Holmes, Alexander Skarsgard and Meryl Streep in a wicked wig.  (Taylor Swift is in the movie, but is completely absent from the two trailers released so far.)  The film debuts August 15, and it remains to be seen if the Weinstein release can tap into the YA dystopian market that “Divergent” and “The Hunger Games” spoke to.
