Watch: Why Are There So Many Super Hero Movies?

Has anyone else noticed that there are a disproportionately high number of comic book hero movies coming out lately? Yes, so it’s not just us? Good. Well, the crew at PBS Ideas Channel, a YouTube associated group that publishes videos that discuss the intersection of culture and technology — including mashups, streaming and fandoms — also seems to have noticed that trend.

“The past 15 years have produced a pantsload of superhero films. It’s
hard to even remember a time before Batman, Spiderman, and Captain
America dominated the summer box office. So are movie studios just lazy
and out of ideas? Or is something else going on?” asks PBS Ideas Channel host Mike Rugnetta.

The video reports that by the end of 2014, there will have been 66 superhero movies released in the past decade, more than the three decades prior altogether. It also uses this frame as a launching pad to discuss themes of historical analysis and to make a crusade against the rich white male club that our culture is viewed as being. But seriously, why doesn’t Wonder Woman have her own movie? Iron Man got three of his own and he’s little more than a glorified robot. Ms. Marvel: The Movie would not only be an excellent alliteration but a chance to broaden audiences.
