5 Best Bets on TV This Week: El Rey Debuts ‘Matador,’ New FX Comedies and More

5 Best Bets on TV This Week: El Rey Debuts 'Matador,' New FX Comedies and More

Sure, Sunday tends to be overcrowded with high-end TV like “The Leftovers” and “Masters of Sex,” but what do the other nights have to offer? Every Monday, we bring you five noteworthy highlights from the other six days of your upcoming week.

“Matador” Series Premiere
Tuesday, July 15 on El Rey at 9pm

Roberto Orci’s “Matador” centers on popular soccer star Tony Bravo, who, using his status as a public figure to access certain elite social circles, doubles as a secret operative for the CIA. Gabriel Luna stars as Bravo a.k.a. Matador. Australian soap star Nicky Whelan, British legend Alfred Molina and frequent television guest stars Neil Hopkins and Tanc Sade round out the rest of the main cast. “Matador” will be the second original series for Robert Rodriguez’s newly-launched El Rey Network

“Inside The Walking Dead: Walker University” Special Presentation
Tuesday, July 15 on AMC at 10pm

AMC gives “The Walking Dead” fans a behind-the-scenes look at how the actors playing zombies undergo special training to, you know, act like zombies. While geared towards fans of the show, this special presentation might teach all the budding filmmakers out there something about world-building and working with actors. For those intrigued, AMC has a short 15-second teaser available on its site.

“The Divide” Series Premiere
Wednesday, July 16 on Wetv at 9pm

Tony Goldwyn and Richard LaGravenese, the duo behind last year’s AMC dud “Low Winter Sun,” team up on a new show for WEtv that centers on Christina Rosa, who works as a case worker for The Innocence Initiative. Played by Tony-winning actress Marin Ireland, we meet Rosa just as she begins work on the case of a death row inmate, who she believes was wrongfully convicted for a murder he did not commit. In light of the botched execution in Oklahoma earlier this year, Goldwyn and LaGravenese’s show couldn’t have come at a more appropriate time — for it appears to contemplate the intricacies of our justice system, particularly the ethical dilemmas related to the death penalty.

“Married” Series Premiere
Thursday, July 17 on FX at 10pm

At long last, the spotlight is on Judy Greer. Always the bridesmaid but never the bride (regardless of whether she appeared in film or television), in “Married,” Greer co-stars with Nat Faxon (“Ben and Kate”) as a married couple who sucks at keeping it together. Based on the trailer — featuring a moment when Greer’s character reminds Faxon’s character that he did, in fact, give her herpes at one point — it looks like we are in for a delightfully awkward treat.

“You’re the Worst” Series Premiere
Thursday, July 17 on FX at 10:30pm

Aya Cash and Chris Geere co-star as selfish, confused young lovers in Stephen Falk’s new post-modern romantic comedy series for FX. Although Cash and Geere both have a considerable number of credits to their respective names — particularly Cash’s supporting roles in “Wolf of Wall Street” and “Sleepwalk With Me,” and Geere’s regular role on the British comedy “The Spa” — “You’re the Worst” marks their first time headlining a big-time project. And under the guidance of series creator Falk, whose cable comedy credits include, “Weeds” and the beloved “Orange is the New Black,” “You’re the Worst” just might be the breakout these two actors have been waiting for. If you’re not convinced, FX has a few sneak peeks available to view on their site.
