A Steven Soderbergh Amazon Pilot with Jennifer Grey is in the Works

Steven Soderbergh has added yet another project to his television roster — bringing him up to a grand total of three. Set in New Jersey during the 1980s, “Red Oaks” centers on David Myers, a teenage boy who gets hired for the summer at the local country club. According to a report published yesterday by Hitfix, “Red Oaks” will feature a “colorful cast of misfit co-workers and wealthy club members,” which suggests that there may be a critical component to the series.

The full cast for the pilot, which is being produced by Amazon Studios, has been announced. Craig Roberts is slated as the lead, a college student whose summer is spent as an assistant tennis pro at a New Jersey country club. Alongside Roberts will be Jennifer Grey, Paul Reiser and Richard Kind. Soderbergh will serve as a producer on the project with David Gordon Green of “Pineapple Express” fame signed on to direct.

“To be able to collaborate with Steven, David and [writer Greg Jacobs,] three of the most highly regarded creators in Hollywood, is an absolute pleasure,” said Roy Price, director of Amazon Studios.

Being that this is going to be an Amazon series, its survival will rely on the good-will of Amazon’s instant viewers. Soderbergh should not have much to worry about though, as the name recognition on this project is sure to bring viewers. Not to mention that Starz recently ordered an adaptation of his 2009 experimental film “The Girlfriend Experience.”
