THIS WEEK’S PREVIEW AND PREDICTIONS
DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES—FOX—WIDE—130 MINS—PG-13—3D—D-BOX
James Franco and Freida Pinto have moved on but the ape franchise seems hardly to miss them. “Cloverfield” director Matt Reeves handles helming duties this time out, overseeing a cast that includes Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, Judy Greer, and of course Andy Serkis as Caesar. “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” opened to $54 million back in August of 2011, on its way to an overall domestic take of $176 million and an additional $305 million overseas, but this time Fox has an even cushier July release date from which to launch and “Rise” also had to contend with six titles in the marketplace which grossed over $18 million. The only title this time out that has a chance of landing at that level would be “Transformers” so look for a higher opening (despite this summer’s box office malaise) with a slightly lower overall collection.
JIM’S WEEKEND BOX OFFICE PREDICTION: $63 MILLION

DIRECTOR: Matt Reeves
THURSDAY NIGHT LATE SHOWS: 10:00 PM, with selected “Dawn of the POTA”/ “Rise of the POTA” double features starting at 7:00 PM
BEGIN AGAIN—WEINSTEIN—1,000 RUNS—104 MINS–R
Director John Carney struck musical box office magic with 2006’s “Once” which featured brilliant performances from Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova and he returns to those roots with “Begin Again”. Cheated-upon singer Keira Knightley is befriended by disgraced record exec Mark Ruffalo as the two collaborate both in the studio and out. The impressive cast also includes Adam Levine, Hailee Steinfeld, Mos Def and Catherine Keener. “Begin Again” is currently in its second week of limited release and this past weekend totaled an impressive $1.3 million in only 175 theatres (for a per screen average of $7,500). Adults looking for something a bit less sublime than apes, robots and Melissa McCarthy may turn this into an out-of-nowhere hit.
