It’s tough to break into the film criticism game, but the Berlinale’s Talent Press gives young aspiring Pauline Kaels and Andrew Sarrises get their start. Started by Berlinale, Goethe-Institute and FIPRESCI (the International Federation of Film Critics), Berlinale Talent Press invites young critics and journalists to report on the events of the 64th Berlin International Film Festival (February 5-15, 2015) and the events of the Berlinale Talents (February 7-12, 2015).
Eligible applicants are young critics or journalists who are fluent in English, are eager to report on the films and events of the festival, and who have published articles in newspapers, film magazines, on websites or at universities. Accepted applicants are expected to cover a broad range or journalistic work and attend daily meetings with a personal mentor.
The Berlinale Talent Press gives young film writers the opportunity to mix with 300 filmmakers and experience the buzz of a prestigious festival, work with more experienced critics, and write a critique or short review every day to be discussed with fellow applicants. Your work may even be published on the Berlinale and FIPRESCI web sites. Accommodation in youth hostels is free from February 5-12, and Berlinale will provide a share of travel expenses depending on your country.
Applications should include CVs, personal data (address, email, etc.), and up to three original copies of articles published in the last two years. Articles not in English should be supplied with a decent translation to show proof of English writing skills.
Applications are due by September 1, 2014. Successful candidates will be notified by early January at latest. To apply, go to the Berlinale web site.
