It’s been a few days since the dust settled on the Emmy nominations, which were a characteristically Emmyian batch of good and bad. But certainly falling in the former was the fact that Laverne Cox deservedly became the first trans person to get an acting Emmy nomination, competing against her equally worthy “Orange Is The New Black” co-stars Uzo Aduba and Natasha Lyonne, not to mention Joan Cusack for “Shameless” and both Tina Fey and Melissa McCarthy for hosting “SNL.”
As far as we’re concerned, it’s the most exciting of all the Emmy acting races, and we’d be thrilled to see any one of those six women deliver a speech. But here’s the trouble… The Emmys don’t telecast the guest acting categories. They are announced at a different ceremony, and whoever wins shows up to present an award on the show we all see (boring). And we think that needs to change. Especially given the strong chance that Cox will win. I mean, this woman gives speeches like nobody’s business. Just look at this or dozens of other examples all over the internet. Not to mention how wonderfully and emotionally historic her win would be. And even if she doesn’t win, who wouldn’t want to see any of those 5 other women accept an award? And maybe let Fey and McCarthy re-do what they did below with these 4 women instead. It was the best Emmy moment ever:
This clearly would mean airing all four guest acting awards, but with nominees like Louis CK, Jimmy Fallon, Steve Buscemi, Nathan Lane, Bob Newhart, Jane Fonda, Allison Janney, Margo Martindale, Paul Giamatti and Beau Bridges in the other 3 categories, I don’t think too many people would mind. So, please, Emmy lords, switch whatever you need to switch around so we can see these categories called on live TV! If that means moving the reality categories to the other night, you have our blessing.
