‘Low Down”s Elle Fanning Wins Best Actress Award at Karlovy Vary Fest

'Low Down''s Elle Fanning Wins Best Actress Award at Karlovy Vary Fest

The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival concluded its 49th edition with a closing night gala ceremony on Friday, July 12, where it honored rising star Elle Fanning for her performance in “Low Down,” Jeff Preiss’ upcoming biopic of jazz pianist Joe Albany. “Low Down” is told from the point-of-view of Albany’s daughter, played by Fanning.

Georgia’s “Corn Island” and Hungary’s “Free Fall” walked away with the festival’s Grand Prix Crystal Globe and Special Jury Prize, respectively. Both awards include significant cash prizes — $25,000 for the Grand Prix and $15,000 for the Special Jury Prize — to be shared by the director and producer of the film.

Mel Gibson, who, along with “French Connection” director William Friedkin, received a lifetime achievement award at this year’s festival, made an appearance at Karlovy Vary early last week to accept the honor in person.
