According to Andrew Sarris, Alain Resnais’ “Hiroshima Mon Amour” was, “the most important contribution to film aesthetics since ‘Citizen Kane!'” Originally released in 1959, the film is a fictionalized version of the bombing of Hiroshima starring Emmanuel Riva as a French actress who falls in love with a Japanese architect played by Eiji Okada. The film is one of the most celebrated motion pictures of its era, admired for its screenplay, performances and stunning visuals.

And now, a newly restored version of “Hiroshima Mon Amour” is being brought to the big screen in the United States. Due to rights complications, American distribution of the film has been stinted until now. During the New York Film Festival, the film will be shown as part of the Revivals section, which honors older movies, ands then it will have a theatrical run — its first in decades — at New York’s Lincoln Center beginning on October 17. The sharp, 4K restoration has not been given a screening date yet for the festival.
“‘Hiroshima Mon Amour’ is one of the most influential films in the short history of the medium,” said New York Film Festival director Kent Jones in announcing the news. “It’s difficult to quantify the breadth of its impact.”
For the general public, tickets to the 52nd New York Film Festival will go on sale on September 7, but can be purchased by Film Society of Lincoln Center members sooner.
