Robert Downey, Jr. Starrer ‘The Judge’ Takes Toronto Opening Night

Robert Downey, Jr. Starrer 'The Judge' Takes Toronto Opening Night

One of the higher-profile fall films has found an appropriate berth. David Dobkin’s father-son drama “The Judge” (Warner Bros.) will open the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival on Thursday, September 4. It stars Robert Downey, Jr. as a jaded city lawyer who returns home when his estranged father (Robert Duvall), the town’s judge, is suspected of murder. As the son tries to discover the truth about his father, along the way he reconnects with the family he left behind. Vera Farmiga, Vincent D’Onofrio, Jeremy Strong, Dax Shepard and Billy Bob Thornton also star in this mainstream dramatic heart-tugger. Is it Oscar material? Warner s is clearly testing the waters in Toronto.

“David Dobkin has delivered a moving, textured story about family, duty and the way we remember our past,” said Piers Handling, Director and CEO, TIFF.  Dobkin brought his first film “Clay Pigeons” to the fest 15 years ago.

Warners screened “Gravity” at the Toronto fest last year after unveiling it at Venice and Telluride. You can be sure that will not happen this time.

The Toronto International Film Festival runs September 4-14, 2014.
