'The Ring 3' And 'Space Invaders' Are Moving Ahead For Some Reason

Sequels, remakes or movies based on branded properties—that’s the holy trinity these days in Hollywood, and if you’re an executive looking to keep your job, you remember that and keep that original script locked in your desk and out of any meetings. Because after all, you have to keep your job. And so today brings with it the usual news of movies we have no interest in being made simply because they can.

First off, though it’s been nine years since “The Ring 2,” Paramount is moving ahead with “The Ring 3.” In fairness, the previous two did pretty well, but that said, no one at all is asking for this, and the movies became a kinda punchline and have been parodied pretty heavily. Anyway, F. Javier Gutierrez (“Before The Fall,” the forever developing “The Crow” remake) is attached to direct. As for the plot? We’ll have to wait and see, but if any mysterious videos arrive, don’t watch them late at night by yourself. It’s probably not going to lead to anything good.

Meanwhile, you might have forgotten, but a few years agoSpace Invaders” (yes, the ’80s video game) started kicking around Hollywood as a movie property, and now it has landed at the feet of producer Akiva Goldsman. He’s the guy behind an array of pictures ranging from “Cinderella Man” to “A Winter’s Tale,” so this could go any number of ways, but it’s probably safe to say this won’t be an Oscar contender. Anyway, for a video game that has nothing to it but pixels shooting other pixels, they at least can’t make it worse than the pre-existing game….can they? [THR/The Wrap]
