With Michel Gondry’s fantasy romance “Mood Indigo” making its way into select theaters this weekend, distributor Drafthouse Films has released a tantalizing two minute clip. The scene may come as quite the jarring shock to viewers unassociated with the moody, cerebral works of the famed director, including “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “Human Nature,” but for fans who adore the reality bending nature of Gondry’s movies, the clip is the perfect tease to get them ready for “Indigo.”
In the film, Romain Duris (“The Beat My Heart Skipped”) plays a wealthy bachelor who falls in love with a rapturous, free-spirited woman (Audrey Tautou of “Amelie” fame) at his friend’s party. Similar to “Sunshine,” “Indigo” throws out what seems like the staples of the romance genre and then replaces them with fantastically inventive new ideas. Just take a look at the clip below for more proof, as the passion of falling in love is made surreal by Gondry’s use of split-screen, gravity-bending movements, and the final image of a flower making its way into the lungs of Tautou’s Chloe.
If the clip isn’t enough to get you to the theater this weekend, the director and stars will be conducting Q&As at select showtimes of “Mood Indigo” at the Landmark Sunshine Cinema in New York City (143 E Houston St.). Tonight, Gondry and Tautou will be following up the 5:00pm and 7:15pm showtimes and introducing the 9:30pm show. Tomorrow, July 19th, Gondry will be taking questions after the 4:00pm and 6:00pm shows.
