WATCH: Disney's 'Into the Woods' Gets a Tantalizing First Trailer (And Production Photos)

Musical theaters nerds, our wishes have been granted: the first trailer for Rob Marshall’s adaptation of “Into the Woods” is here, and it definitely makes us wish for more.

An adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s beloved 1986 musical–which weaves together the stories of several well-known fairy tales and explores what happens after ‘happily ever after’–has been in the making for decades.  Disney’s to thank for getting the project over the finish line, tapping Marshall to direct, Lapine to pen the script and Sondheim to write a new song.  (Although, as we’ve noted, some very big plot changes have been made at the Mouse House’s behest.)

The film’s first trailer shows off its stellar cast: Anna Kendrick, Emily Blunt, James Corden, Chris Pine, Johnny Depp and, most importantly, Meryl Streep, in what looks like it’s going to be a knockout performance as the unnamed Witch.  When she croaks “Go to the wood” as the end of the spot, it’s enough to make any theater lover shiver with delight.

One thing you might expect from a musical is missing from the first “Into the Woods” trailer: songs.  But listen closely to the background music and you’ll hear orchestral strains of several of the shows songs such as “On the Steps of the Palace” and “Stay With Me.”

Disney’s releasing “Into the Woods” on Christmas Day–looks like they’re hoping Santa will bring them some awards love and a chunk of the family box office, to boot.  Watch the full trailer below–plus, after the jump, some new production stills.
