Although it shockingly has yet to secure U.S. distribution, early reaction to Canadian auteur Xavier Dolan’s fifth feature “Mommy” –which took home the Cannes Competition jury prize–was upbeat. You can get a three-minute taste of this intense, emotional rocket ride of a family drama via the first official trailer below, just ahead of its theatrical run in the writer-director’s native Quebec on September 19.
Remarkably accomplished for a 24-year-old, Dolan tells the love story of an inept single mother and her sweet but volatile son, who easily pitches into uncontrollable rage. Keeping him calm and happy is key. A sweet neighbor locked into dull family life enjoys escaping across the street into this heady maelstrom, and the improbable trio find happiness–for a while. Stateside moviegoers will simply have to wait and see.
