Watch: Laverne Cox Lights up John Legend's 'You & I' Music Video

Well here’s an idea which could have been cringeworthy or patronising, but actually turned out quite beautifully. A few days ago (yes sorry, we’re late to the party) John Legend released the music video for his new single “You & I”.

Featuring a wide variety of women, young and old, of every race and look imaginable (several of those shown have visible illnesses or deformities, for example), the message of the song is clear. And while this could have been an exercise in box-ticking, it in fact comes across as quite sincere. Of course, we’ve seen this “United Colors of Benetton” approach before, and it’s not the same as deviating from the norm in the choice of say, backing dancers, or a love interest in a major movie. But it has good intentions, and we appreciate that – especially when one of the women featured is bent favorite Laverne Cox, who is granted her own intimate moment removing make-up as she gazes ponderously at camera.
