Academy Originals, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences’ first digital initiative, has just released a new video featuring Independent Spirit John Cassavetes Award-winning filmmaker Mike White. The short, four-minute episode has White talking about his idea of creativity and how it represents “trying to insist that you’re alive.”
The writer cum director cum actor, responsible for “Chuck And Buck,” “School of Rock,” “Year of the Dog” and television’s “Enlightened,” shares insight into both his “open” and “closed” phases, critiquing how it might appear that he is procrastinating and beating himself up at the same time. He speaks of how inspiration is “like getting a fever,” and that when he begins to write, “the idea is full borne” in his head. He also cautions against writing for money, warning that it “closes off the your possibilities towards a certain kind of originality.” Check out the video below below:
