The Brooklyn-based film and music label Factory 25 has picked up the North American distribution rights for “Hellaware,” a quirky comedy starring comedian and musician Keith Poulson.
Directed by Michael M. Bilandic and shot by “Listen Up Philip” cinematographer Sean Price Williams, “Hellaware” is a satire of the New York City art world. Per the press release, the film centers on an aspiring photographer who is played by Poulson:

Jaded by the “incestuous, New York, socialite shit” that sells at prominent art galleries, Nate (Keith Poulson) embarks on a quest for a more authentic brand of contemporary art. When a coked-up YouTube search leads to a music video from Delawarean Goth rappers Young Torture Killers, Insane Clown Posse knockoffs, Nate knows he’s found his subjects. He soon drags his friend-with-benefits Bernadette (Sophia Takal) to rural Delaware to shoot the group playing in their parents’ basement. To “immerse himself” in the group’s culture and add an extra layer of realism to his work, Nate befriends the rappers and makes return trips to get to know them. But as his relationship with group develops, he becomes increasingly aware that, while you can take the boy out of the art world, you can’t take the art world out of the boy.
“Hellaware” previously played at the BAMCinemafest and the Austin Film Festival. The film will be made available on digital platforms on September 23 and is slated to open at Cinema Village in NYC on September 26. Screenings in other parts of the country will take place over the course of the winter.
