Frank Capra's 'It Happened One Night,' 'Tootsie' And More Coming To Criterion In November

The Criterion Collection is always guaranteed to earn some of our money each month, but what to do when some of the big movies they’ve got coming have already been on home video for years? Is it really worth it just to get a wacky C on the cover? You tell us, but this lineup for November is still pretty solid all around.

Leading the way is Frank Capra‘s comedy classic “It Happened One Night,” the first movie in Oscar history to sweep all five top categories —Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay. As per usual, this edition is coming fully loaded, with a feature length documentary about the director, his first silent film and much more. And while this movie has been around on DVD for a while, perhaps this dazzling new 4K reproduction will indicate new depths in the film.

Speaking of classics, “Tootsie” is certainly more modern, but no less deserving of such a description. Sydney Pollack‘s film will come loaded with the commentary track he did for Criterion’s laserdisc (remember those?) edition of the movie, two documentaries about the movie, new interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, deleted scenes and much more.

Monte Hellman fans will surely dig a double whammy of “The Shooting” and “Ride In The Whirlwind” getting put together on the same release, complete with commentaries for both with Hellman, interviews, a video essay and more. Pretty nice treatment for what are largely cult films. But no participation from Jack Nicholson?

Meanwhile, a massive set of Les Blank‘s documentaries spanning five decades of filmmaking will be dropping too. Damn. And among the extras will be eleven of his short films, interviews and more. Doc fans will want to get on this one.

Lastly, Michelangelo Antonioni‘s “L’Avventura” is finally getting a Blu-ray upgrade. Full specs on all the releases right here.
