Project of the Day: ‘The Night Owl’

Project of the Day: 'The Night Owl'

Here’s your daily dose of an indie film in progress; at the end of the week, you’ll have the chance to vote for your favorite.

In the meantime: Is this a movie you’d want to see? Tell us in the comments.

The Night Owl

Tweetable Logline: A film about co-existence and fear in a city of 8 million.

Elevator Pitch: After a long night out with friends, Aaron is awoken in the middle of the night by a loud banging on his apartment. His older and working class downstairs neighbor Leonard, stands firmly in his doorway with a hammer clenched tightly in his hands. He continues to bitterly inform Aaron about a loud noise that has been keeping him up all night. Leonard is convinced this noise is coming from Aaron’s apartment but Aaron genuinely knows nothing of this. Over a series of nights and interactions the tension and suspense escalates to an abstract and volatile outcome.

Production Team:
Anthony Nicolau – Writer / Director
Andrew Trost – Cinematographer
Sacha Iscra – Producer
Keagan Fuller – Chief Lighting Technician

About the film: As a filmmaker, I’m drawn in by the contrast between the way modern technology has us constantly communicating, yet in some ways growing increasingly out of touch with one another. This often sets the background for misunderstandings, fear, conflict and at times violence. It has become increasingly important to me to analyze this on a human level, which brings us face to face, much like the characters in “The Night Owl.” Using a simpler narrative allows me as the director to pull out complexities and tackle subjects like gentrification and fear of the other in a more arresting manner.

Current Status: We have shot the opening scene (the beginning of the Kickstarter video) and are currently fundraising to complete the rest of the film.
