BOI Projected Top 10: Denzel Has No Equal This Weekend

Barring some sort of bizarre international incident, Mr. Reliable, Denzel Washington, should easily settle into his usual perch atop the weekend box office chart as Sony’s “The Equalizer” from director Antoine Fuqua debuts later tonight.  The film, which also stars Chloe Grace Moretz, Marton Csokas and Melissa Leo, is on track for an opening in the same $33 million area code as BOI predicted on Monday.  In addition, Laika/Focus Features’ “The Boxtrolls” is primed for a debut in the mid teens, as predicted Monday as well.

Elsewhere in the top 10 look for big drops on both “A Walk Among The Tombstones” and “No Good Deed”, largely due to the return of Denzel into the marketplace, but in the case of “Tombstones”, reviews have been middling at best and a B- Cinemascore also helps to sound a death knell for the second weekend.  It will be interesting to watch the holdover on “The Maze Runner”.  February’s “Divergent” fell 53% on its second weekend, but that film was coming off a debut well north of “Maze”‘s $32.5 million, but balance that off with the fact that Fox will be losing its IMAX screens this week to “Equalizer”.  We’ll see.

BOX OFFICE INSIDER’S PROJECTED WEEKEND TOP 10

3)   THE MAZE RUNNER—FOX—$15.6 MILLION—52% DROP

4)   THIS IS WHERE I LEAVE YOU—WARNER BROTHERS—$6.1 MILLION—DOWN 47%
Comedies usually hang in better than other genres, especially if they’re basically alone in the marketplace (sorry, “Let’s Be Cops”)
5)   A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES—UNIVERSAL—$5.7 MILLION—DOWN 55%
“This is Where” has been slowly creeping up on Liam during the week and should pass it once Denzel arrives
6)   A DOLPHIN TALE 2—WARNER BROTHERS—$4.2 MILLION—DOWN 52%
“Boxtrolls” takes the swagger out of Winter
7)   NO GOOD DEED—SONY/SCREEN GEMS—$4.1 MILLION—DOWN 58%

8)   GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY–BUENA VISTA—$3.1 MILLION—DOWN 40%
This may never vacate the Top 10
