In his two previous
documentary films, “America the Beautiful 1” & “2,” African-American filmmaker Darryl Roberts set
out to explore the public’s and media’s endless fascination with youth and beauty, and its destructive curse.
his third and final film of the trilogy, “America The Beautiful 3: The
Sexualization of Our Youth,” which Roberts
calls his “most personal” project yet, he goes even deeper, exploring a culture that glorifies
the sexual exploitation of youth, and its
harrowing consequences in which companies make billions from the
objectification of women and children.
As Roberts says, compared to sexual images and pop cultural celebrities of the past, they would all now be “considered tame compared to
today’s pop culture icons. America’s youth has far more access to sexualized
imagery than ever before. They’re also becoming sexually active far earlier
than previous generations. But, why? …Who is at fault for perpetuating these
harmful standards? Is it corporate greed in advertising? Is it pop culture? Could parents be to blame?”
He further added
that “ATB 3” portrays “how women grow up believing they only have two choices: to be desirable
or invisible. While boys are raised in a porn culture that makes it difficult
for them to conceptualize healthy relationships with women.”
“We are experiencing a
generational shift because of the internet which means younger people have
greater access to pornography and dating apps like Tinder that normalize casual
sex…young women grow up aware that they only have two choices: to be desirable
or invisible. While the young men discuss their consumption of pornography and
how it negatively impacted their relationships with women to the point that
they couldn’t see them as fully-realized people.”
Now the film is set to open in the US and overseas, starting in Washington D.C. on Sept 30th.
But In a radical movie that hopefully may be copied by other organizations, Carolyn
Costin, who is the president of Monte Nido Treatment Center, believes that the “ATB 3” and its message, are so important
that everyone should be able to see it regardless of their financial status.
As a result, she has agreed to
sponsor a nationwide theatrical tour of the film, buying out all of the seats in
15 cities, so that people could attend a premiere of the film for free.
