So there I was on Twitter this morning, and noticed a number of tweets with the hashtag #DenzelIsJamesBond. Unaware of any related news, I used Google search to see what I could find out about this trending Twitter hashtag.
And I quickly discovered that Denzel Washington took part in an extensive Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) over the weekend, as his next film, “The Equalizer,” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
During the online conversation with fans, Washington was asked many questions, of course, including whether he’d consider being the next James Bond. Some of you might recall that, a few years ago, Washington was asked to consider the possibility, only to reply, saying that it was too late for him to take on the role.
This time around, however, he seemed a little more enthusiastic about the idea, replying during his Reddit AMA with: “The next James Bond? They better hurry up! Yes I would! Who’s doing James Bond now..Daniel Craig! Did they shoot another one? Everybody should tweet Denzel is James Bond! Send it to the studio!… We start the Denzel is Bond campaign today! James Washington. Denzel Bond!”
Of course, he may have (and was likely, I think) just been kidding around, and wasn’t at all being serious. That’s one problem with these online Q&A sessions – you can’t always be sure of one’s disposition at any given moment.
But it’s sometimes fun to speculate, even though I don’t think he has any chance at being cast as Bond. But stranger things have certainly happened.
No matter – fans have taken to Twitter and are doing what he requested that they do: tweeting their requests that he be cast in the part, with the hashtag #DenzelIsJamesBond. I’m not sure if the actor is aware of what he’s started.
During the Reddit AMA, he was actually quite chatty, and fielded just about every question asked, including how he makes his marriage last, why his closest friends aren’t actors, his favorite pizza toppings, his involvement in Will Smith’s previously announced remake of “Uptown Saturday Night,” and more.
