First Look At Katherine Waterston & Benicio Del Toro In Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘Inherent Vice’

First Look At Katherine Waterston & Benicio Del Toro In Paul Thomas Anderson's 'Inherent Vice'

Update: Another image has arrived from Rolling Stone, again featuring Waterston, this time with Joaquin Phoenix

We’re right in the heart of film festival season, but for many, the most anticipated film of 2014 isn’t at Venice, Telluride or Toronto: it’s Paul Thomas Anderson‘s adaptation of Thomas Pynchon‘s “Inherent Vice,” which will premiere as the centerpiece gala of this year’s New York Film Festival exactly a month from today.

The film, a trippy Californian noir that reunites PTA with his lead from “The Master,Joaquin Phoenix, has been under wraps for a long time, as is so often the case with the director. But as the premiere approaches, hints are starting to creep out, with two images of Phoenix and co-star Josh Brolin having been revealed previously. And now, the rest of the cast are emerging as well.

As part of a roundup regarding up-and-coming actresses, the New York Times, like The Playlist a few weeks ago, picked out Katherine Waterston as a face to watch due to her major role in “Inherent Vice,” and have included a first look at the actress (daughter of “Law & Order” star Sam) as her character, Shasta. Waterston’s a relative unknown, but awards buzz is already strong with respect to her performance.

Meanwhile, the new issue of Empire includes another photo from the movie, depicting Phoenix, Brolin and Benicio Del Toro, who plays Phoenix’s attorney. It’s only a scan at present, but again, it’s nice to see just another tiny glimpse of the movie.

In other “Inherent Vice” news, the film has unsurprisingly been rated R by the MPAA, according to Cigarettes & Red Vines, for “drug use throughout, sexual content, graphic nudity, language, and some violence.” The film also marks a remarkably swift turnaround for the director who let five years elapse between “Punch Drunk Love” and “There Will Be Blood,” and another five between the latter and “The Master,” and it seems like Anderson’s going to continue this prolific pace: we’ve heard some whispers that PTA is already planning a new project with Megan Ellison‘s Annapurna Pictures, marking their second collaboration together.

Again, “Inherent Vice” will premiere at the New York Film Festival exactly a month from today, on October 4th, with the full release following on December 12th.
