Freestyle Claims Week To Itself With Message-Based 'The Identical', While Forrest Runs To Imax

THIS WEEK’S PREVIEWS AND PREDICTIONS

THE IDENTICAL—FREESTYLE RELEASING—1,500-1,700 THEATRES—107 MINS—PG
See if this story sounds vaguely familiar.  Two brothers, separated at birth, take vastly different paths in their lives as one becomes an iconic rock ‘n’ roll star and the other battles his love of music with attempting to please his preacher father.  Have Elvis star in “Footloose” and you basically have “The Identical”.  In speaking with Freestyle co-chairman Mark Borde today he told me “I’m very excited because the film is quite good…with a quality cast and a wonderful message…and we have the date to ourselves”.   The film’s ad campaign has certainly spared no expense, placing 30 second ads in pre-season football, MLB baseball, the VMA’s and even the Emmys.  Newcomer Blake Rayne (who actually started out his career as an Elvis impersonator in 1998) stars as both the rock legend and the lost-in-life son of Reverend Wade (Ray Liotta).  Ashley Judd, Seth Green and Joe Pantoliano co-star.  It’s pretty hard not to do at least a modicum of business when you have the week to yourself, no matter what week that might be.  “Guardians of the Galaxy” is the only title that even has a shot at topping $10 million this week and with “The Identical” only going out on 1,500-1,700 runs (which seems about right, by the way) that $10 million plateau looks unattainable but look for the southern half of the country to take the message and music of this film to heart and the movie should also resonate with a faith based audience in other areas as well..

JIM’S WEEKEND BOX OFFICE PREDICTION:  $7 MILLION

IN ADDITION….
FORREST GUMP IN IMAX—PARAMOUNT—142 MINS—PG-13
How about this for a number…back in 1994, Robert Zemeckis’ “Forrest Gump” grossed $329 million at the domestic box office, which translates to (ready?) $528 million in 2014 dollars.  Yes, $528 million.   Paramount and IMAX have teamed up to give the film its first ever IMAX release this Friday for one week only in the big screen format.  “A true game changer, “Forrest Gump” is a modern American movie classic” says Greg Foster, Senior Executive Vice President, Imax Corp and CEO of Imax Entertainment, who adds, “This film deserves a quality platform like The IMAX Experience to help make the 20th anniversary one to remember”.   The movie is indeed one of the true landmarks in American moviemaking and features brilliant and iconic performances from Sally Field, Robin Wright, Gary Sinise, a (very) young Haley Joel Osment and, of course, an Oscar winning turn from Tom Hanks.
