Michael Ealy Will Lead the Biloxi Wade-Ins Protests (1959-63) in 'A Civil Right'

Michael Ealy has signed up to star in a biopic on civil rights activist Dr. Gilbert Mason, titled “A Civil Right,” which will be produced by the newly-launched Revolution Media.

Gilbert Mason led the Biloxi Wade-Ins protests, that occurred on the beaches of Biloxi, Mississippi between 1959 and 1963. The demonstrations were in an effort to de-segregate the beaches of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Before the beaches were desegregated, homeowners claimed the beaches as private property, and despite the fact  the beaches were built by the Army Corps of Engineers using taxpayer funds, African Americans were restricted to designated areas of the beachfront. The effort to keep the beaches segregated was supported by the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission.

Dr Mason served as President of the Mississippi NAACP chapter for 30 years. He died in 2006.

The film will be directed by Salvatore Stabile (“The Sopranos,” “Rescue Me,” and “Power”), who also penned the script.

Casting is underway for the feature project.
