Executive produced by Steven Soderbergh, the “fly-on-the-wall” documentary will be sure to court controversy and could be the October surprise nonfiction event of the year–and the mid-term election cycle. The film’s title comes from the handle that Snowden used when sending Poitras encrypted e-mails, saying he had information that would blow the whistle on the massive covert surveillance programs run by the NSA and other intelligence agencies.

Laura Poitras’ highly anticipated Edward Snowden doc is hitting theaters this October. The announcement came with little warning — at least to me — along with the news that it would premiere at the New York Film Festival. Called CITIZENFOUR, the film is described as an “utterly riveting first-person look at how Poitras and journalist Glenn Greenwald first met with whistleblower Edward Snowden in Hong Kong where he gave them documents showing widespread abuses of power by the National Security Administration.”
