This Week's Indie Releases: Rory Kennedy's 'Last Days In Vietnam', Illegal Alien Murder Mystery 'Frontera' and Rapture Thriller 'The Remaining'

Although no indie release this week reaches out and grabs the moviegoer by the neck and screams “you must see me!!!” there are a few intriguing offerings this week.  Rory Kennedy (“Ghosts of Abu Ghraib”) explores the “Last Days in Vietnam”, as the final, chaotic weeks of the war cause internal conflict between a US government missive to save only Americans or ignore the mandate and save as many South Vietnamese lives as possible.  Kennedy is an exceptional documentary filmmaker and this should be riveting entertainment for anyone interested in American history.

Short film director Michael Berry writes and directs the Mexican border murder mystery, “Frontera”, which stars Ed Harris, Eva Longoria, Michael Pena and Amy Madigan, When a sheriff’s wife is killed on his ranch, blame immediately falls onto a Mexican illegal alien but as the mystery unfolds, all in not as it seems.  The film was already released on VOD.

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group will be releasing, via the Triumph banner, The Rapture horror/thriller, “The Remaining” from director Casey La Scala.  The film is a supernatural thriller set against an apocalyptic background from Sony’s faith based label, Affirm Films.   The unit will release the film limited initially in only about 70 theatres, with a possible further expansion planned.

After all that, if you’re looking for something perhaps a bit lighter, this week IFC’s “The Trip To Italy” expands into 30 markets.  Last week the film played in 52 theatres so this week it will easily be in more theatres than the original did in its widest week (62 locations).  The film is catching on and, as per my review of last Thursday, is a delight on many levels.

Finally, if Bollywood is your thing, Yash Raj opens “Daawat-E-Ishq” with Indian film stars Aditya Roy Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra.  Don’t expect too much as this should fall into the lower level of Bollywood releases.
