David Cronenberg first brought his absolutely bonkers Hollywood satire “Maps To The Stars” to the Cannes Film Festival in May, where star Julianne Moore won Best Actress for her off-the-wall turn as aging actress Havana Segrand. With more strong notices coming from its Toronto International Film Festival screening, distributor E-one has released a new trailer that showcases only a hint of the madness to come.
Written by Bruce Wagner as an assault on modern culture, and filled with scathing caricatures, “Maps” stars Moore alongside Mia Wasikowska, Robert Pattison, John Cusack and Olivia Williams. The new trailer opens with a cringing phone call that hints at Moore’s towering performance, then segues into a bombardment of scenes alluding to countless Hollywood scandals and secrets. For a movie all about skewering the media industry, the use of brooding, “Inception”-style music is a humorously witty bonus that sets the perfect tone for the drama.
While the film’s U.S. distribution plans have yet to be determined — Focus World picked the film up for a possible 2015 VOD release, meaning no Oscar campaign for Moore despite her win at Cannes — E-one will open the October 31st in Canada.
