No doubt emboldened by the Oscar nomination received for “The Square,” Netflix is continuing its foray into the documentary world with its upcoming release of “Virunga.” Yesterday, the streaming giant released the film’s first trailer.
At first glance, Orlando von Einsiedel’s film appears to be a nature film about the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but the clip quickly reveals much more, as the focus shifts from the micro to the macro, from wildlife to the turmoil of the country just outside the park borders. We were so moved by the film that we included it as part of our list of Best Documentaries Of 2014 So Far, calling it “a stirring activist call to arms that must be heard” and comparing it to the Oscar-winning “The Cove.”
“Virunga” premieres on Netflix on November 7th, and won awards at Hot Docs, Doxa and Little Rock Film Festival. Watch the trailer below.
